Experience Journey on PS4

intheBlog

August 12, 2014

Cross-posted from the U.S. PlayStation Blog on behalf of Jenova Chen.

Hi everyone, this is Jenova Chen, President and Creative Director of thatgamecompany. It’s been quite a ride seeing how far Journey has come in the two and a half years since its launch on PlayStation 3.

Journey image

Thanks to the many referrals of our players over the years, we’ve seen a steady flow of new players discovering the game and a community of veterans helping them along the way. Many players who bought a PS4 wrote us wondering if they will be able to experience Journey one day.

Today we are happy to share that a whole new generation of players will experience the wonder of Journey when it comes to PlayStation 4 later this year.

Thanks to the heartfelt efforts of fellow developers Tricky Pixels, players new and old alike will share in the beloved Journey experience in visually stunning 1080p. More details about Journey’s release on PlayStation 4 are in the works for future announcement.

Until then, players can enjoy discovering, or rediscovering, Journey’s predecessors — flOw and Flower — both available now on PS3, PS4 and PS Vita.

One more thing! Journey, much like flOw and Flower, are digital cross-buy titles, which means if you’ve purchased it for PS3 through the PlayStation Network, you can download Journey to your PS4 for free. 🙂

Journey is one of my favorite games ever made, so I’m pleased I can enjoy Journey once again on PS4. Part of the Journey experience is the amazing soundtrack. Personally I find it one of the best soundtracks ever made. As a fan I hope, really hope, you’d consider releasing this soundtrack in a physical form (LP plz!).

I purchased Journey, PS3 – physical collectors edition SPECIFICALLY to support That Game Company.

Can you please implement a disc check for the PS3 disk, several other PS4 games have already done this.

I don’t see why collectors should be the ones who are getting shafted here.

We’re working hard on our next game, but we don’t have plans to announce an announcement. We’ll release more information on the game when the game’s development is at a specific point. We announced Journey too early, so we’re making sure that we don’t do that again. 🙂

    @abrasion:
Sony’s disc check involves reading a code on the disc that is different on every single disc, hence making it so others cannot use that same disc to play PS4 or PSVita versions of the games.
The Journey CE was released before this was released, so Sony isn’t able to do this with the CE.
As for other ways, we can’t say, as it all depends on what Sony is able to do, but they have looked into it.

Remember that you are buying an copy of the game with the CE that cannot be taken away from you. With the download, you’re only buying a license, so you’re missing out on a lot of consumer rights.

I’m 48, have gamed all my life, and I play Journey on PS3 pretty much EVERY night. It has become the quiet, still point in my life, something I return to again and again as a refuge from the hurly-burly of 9 to 5 (well, 8 to 6 more like).
So glad to hear it will be coming to PS3 as well.
As I play Journey so often, I can’t help but wonder: in the PS4 version, will there be any way to tell how many times one has Journeyed? Coz I can’t tell on the PS3 version, but for me it would have to be getting up around the 4-500 trip mark…

      September 30, 2014 at 6:36 am

      @Jos:
Sony owns Journey completely, so it’s against the financial interests of the company to release Journey on PC or Mac. The reason Sony funded Journey was to use it as leverage to get people to buy the PS3 (and now PS4), so making it purchasable on PC or Mac would give people fewer reasons to buy a PS3 or PS4, causing potential sales of other games and DLC (which Sony takes a cut out of) to decrease more than how much they’d make on Journey sales on PC or Mac.
That said, our next game is self-published, so we’re hoping on bringing it to a large number of platforms. 😀

Although, if they weren’t exclusive, then they never would have been made (no company would have been willing to fund such strange ideas for games). We feel that it’s best to have been able to make flOw, Flower, and Journey than to have never made them.

When i played Journey i was totally stunned, it is one of the most beautiful, moving, satisfying games i have ever played.
Then i went looking for Flower, and then finally Flow!(I know reverse order) Wow, whats next!
I will try and be patient for the next game, while still playing over and over the other 3….Thanks

I can’t say enough how I feel about Journey. This was my first game by TGC, and after I played it I bought Flower, Flow and Unfinished Swan. I can’t count how many times I’ve finished Journey, I come back to this game again and again and every time- new people, new experience, new feelings. Once I got a message from a player: ” Thank you! My friend was playing Journey with you on my PS3 yesterday, he was so excited! He bought his own PS3 today, just because of this game”. This was the best message I’ve ever got on PSN. Thank you very much guys, for this masterpiece, a true art, the game, which makes even men cry sometimes. Everything- the idea, music, sounds, colors, scenery is just perfect. Journey made me think about what our life is… Whenever I feel bad I play this game and I feel better. I recommended this game to my aunt, after she lost her mum (my granny). She isn’t a player, never ever played video games, but when she started Journey she couldn’t stop, she played it from the beginning to the end 2 times in a row without breaks! She said she felt better after playing, this game made her understand and accept some things about life, same it did to me. And I’m so happy this game comes to PS4, more people will get this amazing experience. Sorry for a big comment, I just wanted to express how I feel about this game and to say thank you, for creating games like this, they are making this world a bit better. I wish you all the best and good luck! Can’t wait for you new game 🙂

YEAH! Such a relief, I was hesitant to upgrade to ps4 just because of this game! Also, though I’m not typically a game soundtrack sort of person, I appreciate it in-game and that’s it. However, I would like to second the comment from Yulaw above, the Journey soundtrack definitely warrants a physical release! (Preferably vinyl!) Or least some high-res FLACs to download!

I played a demo of Journey when it first came out and just didn’t get it then after seeing so many good reviews for it I tried it again and was treated to one of the most beautiful, elegant and emotion gaming experiances I’ve ever had. The music is so engagin and “The journey” itself quite moving. Thanks thanks Jenova and team 🙂

The only reason for me not to sell my PS3, was so that I could keep on playing a game such as Journey throughout my life and also show it to the people I really care about. By making a PS4 version of Journey, you have ensured my purchase – yet again. I would also like to note that the only games I play AT ALL nowadays are thatgamecompany games. Those are games anyone, who would have the slightest understanding of art, would really like.

I hope this will be more expansive game than the PS3 Version 😉 Like to explore the city ruins in the background as have found all the hidden areas in the game and would be a bonus if you could join ones friends as the random hookup that is already in place. This game could be soon much more. I play it most days of the week, especially after recording sessions in our chill out area, very calming and soothing and the clients love it too. I have bought the T-shirts , cards etc and wear them quite a lot LOL. Will have to get some replacements soon I. So pleased that Sony still has an interest in the game but please expand the game.

Shut up guys, we don’t want to know the release date of journey, we just like talking about the awesome graphics of the game. In fact, we all want to wait for another 3 years before they even think about releasing the game to ps4. That’s what we want, we want to wait for the game to come out in 3 years…HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH. Yeah I agree with the last few guys, what’s your problem everyone? Why are you so scared to ask when the game Journey comes out? You all are just like democrats, we ask a question, and you don’t even answer it, hahah, what a laugh.

The reason why no one is discussing the release date is because the release date has never been announced. The game is coming. Relax. I’d far rather have the game come out without bugs than be rushed out to satisfy a bunch of whiny gamers…. who would simply complain incessantly about the bugs.

I’ve worked with smart game developers on various projects. Release dates are typically not announced until they have a pretty solid idea as to when it will be completed. Announcing a release date and then to have it pushed back will irritate people even more so that what is happening in here now. When they have a pretty solid date they feel confident they can hit….. they’ll announce it. Until then, be patient.

We’re anxious and eager along with all of you. I trust our anticipation and eagerness will pay off once the release makes it’s way to our PS4s in the coming future…. Please hang in there with us a bit longer. 🙂

I do also prefer getting a game that is finished, but it is obvious that Tricky Pixels ran into some problems and looking at the nature of the game those are probably networking issues that prevent the game from being put already.

However as a response to what Sunni said. That train has already left the station when originally you wrote this in the announcement: “Today we are happy to share that a whole new generation of players will experience the wonder of Journey when it comes to PlayStation 4 later this year.”

“This year” aka 2014 is over, it is 2015 now. That is why people are asking for more info. When a game gets announced for 2014 and then it does not come out that year and there is no real official statement as to why that is people get angry and/or and/or frustrated.

Neither Tricky Pixels (do they even have a twitter?!) nor you guys did communicate the delay to us properly. C’mon, Journey is not the biggest game out there so please be more open to your loyal fan base and as smaller devs be more upfront and be a role model and simply tell us which issues you ran into and why and that you are currently aiming for this or that date and that you will keep updating us when there is anything new to share.

But no one does that… AT ALL. It is just the “we do not know what these guys are doing. It is great though, but nothing to share guys” type of answer that could also be translated to “F u guys. Stop asking.”

We’d just love to see more openness after the delay we only knew about because no game came out. Just send Tricky Pixels to the PS blog to give us an update.

Anyway, that is it for me. I’d like to see such a detailed post from you (tgc) once in a while. an no offense, I love you and the game.

Just a tricky question which came into my mind: Will journey be considered as a multiplayer game on ps4? In other words: Will I need to pay for psn network to play journey together with other players?

@katatonic I believe Journey on PS4 will be an exemption so players won’t have to pay extra for the multiplayer, however this decision is ultimately up to Sony so we’ll see what is officially announced on that matter.

@KingKevo you’re right, the train did leave the station when we made the announcement. At the time, we were told this was coming and to prepare an announcement. I’m sorry it’s been delayed as much as it has, I understand the tease and anticipation is frustrating. I’m also sorry I don’t have access to any more official details, as that is all we have been informed of because we are not working directly on the port.

I recognize this is a lot of patience to ask of our community. As soon as SCEA provides further details to us, we will share them here as well, as any further info will come from them directly.

@John Thank you for sharing with your family members! That is exciting, we’ll send out updates as soon as we find out!

This is not a multiplayer game.

This is a singleplayer experience showing another random player in his solo experience if he is at the same place…

A multiplayer game would also allow us to choose a friend to play with.

So we are now at March and still no “official” word as to what has gone wrong with the PS4 release of Journey. I have no problem with delays, but if it is to occur, at least explain why and when we can expect it to be complete. Its a port from PS3 to PS4! If naughty dog can manage with The Last of Us, what is wrong with you guys? You can’t fudge your way out of the fact that this is a small downloable game only.

I went on Journey last night for the first time in some months. Clearly the number of players is down a lot from the early days — I can hardly complain having not played for a long time — however one other traveller did appear for a couple of minutes but did not stay around. I hope the PS4 release will stimulate a new wave of players. Journey is one of my favourite games of all time, and there is a very special thing about travelling with a companion.

Here are the answers to all of your questions:

2014 Announcement & Original Release Window:
The port was originally slated for a release in 2014, but in order to make the game run fluidly in 1080p and 60FPS, it had to be pushed back. Journey was specifically designed to take as much advantage of the PS3’s architecture as possible, so there was much work to be done.

    Stage of development/estimation of release:
We are not developing the port, as many of you know. Tricky Pixels is porting the game over, with Sony overseeing the process. We can’t say what stage of development or give an estimation for release unless if Sony tells us where it’s at and that it’s okay to tell. The main issue, though, is that porting over games isn’t an exact science, so there are always new issues coming up. Most game publishers, Sony included, don’t give firm release dates until the downloadable games are finished. So, no one can give a firm release date until the game is nearly finished or completely finished and through Quality Assurance.

    Journey PS4 Collector’s Edition:
The Collector’s Edition is slated to release this summer, with regions/countries and a specific release date to be announced at a later date.

    PC/XBox/WiiU/etc. release for Journey:
It won’t happen unless if Sony stops making video game consoles, because Sony owns the game and funded it in order to make it exclusive to their platforms. Even if Sony stops making consoles, it’d depend on whether or not Sony wants to port and publish it on anything else.

    PS Vita Port of Journey:
Nothing’s been announced regarding a PS Vita port. Sony does know that a lot of people want a PS Vita port. We can’t make any comments other than those.

    Tricky Pixels Contact Info:
They don’t have a website as of yet, but I’d suggest that everyone just patiently wait until the news is announced.
There’s no need to worry if or if not its coming out or if Tricky Pixels can do the job. The port is coming along really well, and it’ll almost certainly be in your PS4s very soon. 😀

For people still interested; this is the most recent official update from the owner of Tricky Pixels and apparently the Director of the game: https://twitter.com/Griff_/with_replies

As you can see, it’s his twitter and I’m sure he’d be willing to give a more detailed update on their (at some point). It’s afaik the only more or less official and direct source to get in touch with Tricky Pixels as they do not operate anything from a website to official pages on twitter or fb. And since we know tgc and Sony cannot/will not really talk about the game our best shpt is to ask Martin Griffiths, owner of and director at Tricky Pixels.

I hope it comes this summer AND WILL BE CROSS BUY SO I GET IT FOR FREE. It’d be the least Sony could do, except for a PS+ release that is.

I was at E3, and they had the game running on 4 demo stations in the Sony booth. The game was fully playable, running at 60fps with volumetric fog and dynamic lighting in place. It looked quite good.

Now for the bad news. Particle effects were minimal, and blowing sand/snow effects were absent, even on the final stage. The noteworthy soft focus/bloom lighting effects were also absent.

In short, while the game itself was intact and playable, most of the things that could potentially cause the frame rate to drop were not yet in. If they plan to implement these before release, I would estimate at least 2 or 3 more months of development will be needed. If not then the game is pretty much ready to go now, but somewhat visually handicapped.

I suppose it’s not even worth asking if it will ever come to PC? I’ve heard so much about this game and would buy it in a minute. Except I only have PC and Xbox

Never mind re: question about PC, I just say the previous post by alexiel. Oh well. As cool as this game sounds, I’m not going to buy a PS3/4 just to play it.

sorry mark like ori and the blind forest , this game is made by a first party studio from the console maker.

so ori will never go to playstation like all microsoft studios games, and santa monica, or thatgamecompany was making games exclusive to Play, but they are free now, they have made a new studio and their next game ABZU , will surely comes to xbox one and maybe PC…

It’s finally coming! Journey for PS4 has been announced for July 21st! 😀

We know it’s been a long time coming, and together with Sony and Tricky Pixels it was important to make sure Journey on PS4 lives up to the experience you were expecting. Thank you so much to each of you for your support and patience leading up to today’s announcement.

Stunning game but utterly ruined by having multiplayer. How do you disable this like the PS3 version??

Hey, just wondering how TGC feels about the poor visual & audio port on PS4 ?
Tricky Pixels clearly didn’t understood nor respected the awesome work that went into Journey. It’s a shame, you guys created a masterpiece, the PS4 port kinda ruins it.
    Love.

    I have a dumb question.. Will PS3 and PS4 players can share a journey together? I mean, ps3 only meet ps3 users or vice-versa or i’m having a ps3 cannot meet a ps4 player?

Don’t know about anyone else, but my Journey on PS4 has been the lonliest one: Absolutely no co-op happening the first couple day of launch. I used to have a PS3 and played the PS3 version so I know what I’m missing.

    @David Daniels:
It should automatically save after you finish each level.
If it isn’t doing so, the best thing to do would be delete the game file, redownload the game, and reinstall it. Make sure that your PS4 Pro’s firmware is updated to the latest version as well.
If it still doesn’t save, then you should contact PlayStation Customer Service.
