We are honored to announce our studio’s participation in a new major exhibition, Virtual Realms: Videogames Transformed. Organized by the Barbican, and in co-production with ArtScience Museum and Melbourne Museum, Virtual Realms is an immersive, audio-visual exhibition redefining videogame creativity as a multi-sensorial artform.
With celebrated game designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi as the guest curator, this exhibition brings together interactive works by some the world’s leading videogame developers; including KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS, Enhance, Tequila Works, Media Molecule, and David OReilly, working in partnership with acclaimed media designers, Rhizomatiks, FIELD.IO, The Mill, Marshmallow Laser Feast, onedotzero, and The Workers.
Each of the six realms is the collaborative outcome between game developer and media designer, presenting unique experiences that draw on the themes in the developer’s gameplay. The realms — SYNESTHESIA, UNITY, PLAY, CONNECTION, EVERYTHING, NARRATIVE – explore experimental installations that reimagine videogame creativity and reshape how we can play together across virtual and physical realms.
In the UNITY realm — the installation collaborated by thatgamecompany’s Jenova Chen (Designer), Ritsu Mizutani (Audio Designer), Vincent Diamante (Music Composer), and media partner, FIELD.IO — the dreamlike world of Sky has been transformed into an immersive spatial environment. Together: the distance between (us) invites everyone to become a player in the all-encompassing generative instrument. As one moves beneath the circular light-sculpture, music and audio fragments from Sky are triggered and a choreography of light sequences unfold. Visitors will explore the relationship between movement, light and sound, as their presence and participation will influence the composition of the space.
Premiering at the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore before embarking on its global tour, Virtual Realms: Videogames Transformed will run from June 12, 2021 to January 9, 2022. Tickets will be available for purchase starting on May 31, 2021 at all Marina Bay Sands Box Offices and the official website.
