Rehearsal for the GSPO Concert, featuring Journey

March 30, 2011 TGC 8 Comments

Cellist Tina Guo recorded this video at the rehearsal last night for the Golden State Pops Orchestra show, “Video Game Soundtracks,” which is taking place in San Pedro, CA on Saturday, April 9th. The conductor, Austin Wintory, is the composer for “Journey,” and is creating a unique arrangement (still in progress!) for this live performance.

    Fantastic. I would love to know what inspired Austin (e.g what kind of brief or source material he was given) to come up with such a stunning soundtrack. There is definitely a lot of emotion going on in the music, no doubt that was one of the things you guys were aiming for.

    Hi, thanks for your kind words!!! Just wait til you hear the actual finished product! 🙂

    For the game itself it’s been a continuous process of back and forth the last several years, since the game began production. We brainstorm as a group, I write things, they (TGC) respond, and we just constantly work at it. And yes, it’s emotional! The scope of the emotions in the game are rather wide-ranging …

    Also this suite you’re hearing rehearsed in the video is a bit different than the music from within the game. They’re similar, but its not exactly the same…

    Vincent wrote music for Cloud (1st game) and Flower (3rd game), while Austin wrote music for Flow (2nd game) and Journey (4th game). You can probably see a pattern emerging here.

    @Hamilton:
    We might bring Vincent Diamante back for another game, but Austin Wintory and Vincent are contracted composers, so we only sign them on to make the sounds of one game at a time.

    Ok, cool, didn’t know Austin was on flOw…. that one sounded amazing too! You guys have great musical talent on board! The Journey music from that video at times alludes to an incredible discovery… I’m very excited to play this!
