On Console Wars

Posted by on November 21st, 2006

I really thought it was just going to be over once the consoles all launched. Like a group of hungry people who have finally been served, everyone would just be quiet and eat their food.

But not so. Already, there are articleson how the PS3 isn't living up to the hype. Granted, this was probably due to a lot of poor marketing choices on Sony's part. But what happened to it being about the GAMES. The critic takes three lines to note that, hey, he did actually enjoy PLAYING games on the thing.

This is life in the post-iPod world, though. Now that everyone is a digital user, everyone is a digital critic. There can't be more than one console, more than one mp3 player, more than one handheld gaming device.

I guess the media has to talk about SOMETHING, but critics like this guy bug the heck out of me.

Just calm down. Enojy the fact that you got paid to play video games for 30 hours last week.

My God!
This man knows nothing!!!!!

Here, Microsoft has had years to complete their online, and Sony has had only one.
Sure, Sony's online will seem a bit lacking, but IT WAS JUST RELEASED!!!!
When the 360 came out, it DID NOT HAVE the ability to download content in the background.
And with certain features, Sony could probably do them, and then get sued. Sony has to figure out a way to copy that they wouldn't get sued.

It seems whenever Sony is lacking in an aspect, people get mad because it isn't like an opponent's, but whenever it is like an opponent's, they say all Sony can do is copy.

Sony made the whole handheld console to home console breach, and Nintendo copied it. Now people are saying that Sony copied Nintendo!!!

When will all of these stupid people just shut up!!!

And by the way…
I had to swear a bunch of times at one of my friends, who is a Nintendo fanboy, because he thinks Nintendo is a perfect company, and he thinks just because I think Sony is the lesser of three evils, I think Sony is perfect.
He is a complete moron. I care about the games more than anything else. I hate the Xbox and Microsoft, but I'll play Halo with my friends. And the Wii remote hurts my hands when I hold it in Excite Truck, so I won't play games like that.

Whoah, this was a long comment.
Sorry about that Kellee.

Yeah, it's all about the games! Although Nintendo's marketing is proving to be far superior to Sony's right now… I saw 6 commercials for Wii or DS during South Park this week! One of them being a Wii giveaway contest. Yikes! That's good press.

…sigh…I hope Sony's "if you build it, they will come" approach pays off…

Sony is starting to have some good marketting, but they really need to shape up.
Nintendo is doing amazingly well with their marktetting, I mean just look at Nintendo WiFi Connection!!!
They are making Nintendo fanboys forget that the PSP had online games before the DS had them.

All I am hearing about the "Baby" commercial and some others of Sony's are "What's wrong with them?"
Most think the Rubix and the new Resistance commercials are good.

And Sony isn't spending much on advertising compared to Nintendo and Microsoft.

SONY's PS3 is nothing more than SONY's attempt to sway a new form of digital PROPRIETARY media into their product line.
BLu-Ray (worst name ever??) media will never take off.
HdDVD makes more sense and sounds a lot less retarded to average joes.

Bitter about the DVD format taking off and knowingly paying rights to release on DVD media, Sony is no stranger to pushing a SONY only format on users of it's products. UMD, Duo memory, etc.

While I'm a big fan of the PS1 and PS2 and even the PSP… you have to admit that SONY doesn't always play nice and expends quite a bit of money to lock tinkerers/developers out of their devices.

Their really isn't a lot of true community around Sony. Most people look at Sony and Microsoft with contempt as a whole.
also…Sony has had some form of online play since PS2 titles debuted with online connectivity. So there really is no excuse, given then ability to play online in the states since the Dreamcast for such piss poor features, or lack there of.

There wouldn't be console wars if the greed of the companies that makes these "consoles" would just concentrate on good games and not on hardware.

like you said … it should be about the games. but it isn't. it's about $3 of plastic being sold for $200.
and then forcing you to buy only 1 form of media it can accept.

hopefully all game consoles will die off and we can use our mac/pc/linux boxes to play our favorite copy or download of a game without having to get roped into the endless hardware purchases year after year.
As where one cannot upgrade a PS2 or xbox without seriously fooling around with it. It is considered par for the course to upgrade and repair a PC/Laptop.

GREED is the problem. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo… they are all a bunch of greedy companies exploiting the ignorance of their consumer base about electronics, hardware and electronic engineering.

that's the bottom line.

Flow is really beautiful by the way.
I usually make my rounds on it daily.(flash version)

I am a little bummed I can't play Cloud.
I'm a mac/linux user natively.

Sorry to get all ranty in here…..
Flow is awesome.
Reminds me a lot of REZ.

Well looking at current sales and so on, Blue Ray seems to win the media war over HD-DVD.
Especially with Blue Ray versions of the Spiderman and Pirates of the Caribbean movies, they pull weight currently.

Overall it means that PS3 will look way more attractive with its Blue Ray drive, especially since the “new third version” Xbox Elite won’t come with HD-DVD and you still need to extra buy a HD-DVD drive.

Also think of it, PS3 and Blue Ray push each other. Every PS3 sold is a new Blue Ray player out there and the owners will most likley buy some movies for it, pushing Blue Ray sales again.

And i am not saying 360 or Wii is bad. I do not even consider Wii part of the console war, Nintendo holds its own place and is not threatend by superior graphic power.

Fact is that each system has its fans, each system has its own special games which will require one to own that system.

t3h end
