THREESPEECH and Sony's Phil Harrison on Digital Distribution

We got an awesome mention yesterday on the gaming and digital entertainment site, threespeech:

In this interview, Sony corporate executive Phil Harrison discusses Sony's initiative to use the digital distribution arena as a playground for innovative and experimental content.

“We announced an initiative from a worldwide studios perspective at GDC this year, he explains, “as a call to action to the development community to encourage them to create games specifically for us, that we would fund, that we would publish, in the online sense of the word, and distribute online.
In other words, Sony is – right now – paying for developers to come up with cool new downloadable games.
“We’re developing about 40 products that fit that strategy right now, Harrison continues. “We showed the very first one of those, called flOw, at the Tokyo Game Show for the first time. That got a really, really good response.

It was great not only to see a screenshot from flOw representing Sony's digital distribution initiative, but also to see Sony getting some web-space to discuss their ideas for this new PS form called downloadable games.
Because although there has been a lot of discussion about the possibilties for downloadable games, few large publishers are really putting their money where their mouth is. Not too surprising, as most large publishers have a sort of reactive development policy; that is, they wait until a trend shows itself before investing money into developing content for it.
But Sony is really taking a proactive position on downloadable games. It truly can be a testing bed for new ideas, as the risk is much, much lower, and at the moment, the Directors at Sony are running with it. I only hope enough developers can step up to the plate and make games that prove this theory out, before somebody decides to pull the plug on it. At any rate, it's an exciting time to be getting into the industry!

I’m not sure if PS3 is the best platform for targeting the casual market, but I do agree that downloadable, $20 games are a very exciting field of innovation right now, and a profitable one. I’m glad TGC didn’t dive into the business with some multi-million dollar AAA title that would only get two weeks of shelf time.
If you’re getting into a funding/producing relationship with Sony, you ought to consider the unique strength of the PS3 for your next title: eye contact. Think about it, PS3 has a built-in second-generation EyeToy, you need a game that plays off the social dynamics of gestures, postures, and eye motion that can be captured with that peripheral. Watch the poker scene in Casino Royale and you will see it.
But for real, very exciting time.
