We are a small studio dedicated to crafting unique and high quality interactive experiences, and we are looking for a talented designer-programmer hybrid who will collaborate with both the engineering and design teams. The goal in this role is to drive the creation and improvement of core gameplay and technical systems and tools highly-tuned for the level of rich feedback and player immersion that helped define our games.

An example week for this person might be: Attend a design meeting and discover the need for a new camera feature to support a new content release. Program the camera feature and jump into the level editor to test and refine its implementation. Then, improve the level editor’s toolset to enable the rest of the design team to make full use of your new feature in future levels. Of course, the role isn’t limited to just camera features. Any interactive system applies — procedural animation, cloth simulation, player controls, AI creatures, NPC interactions — use your imagination!

This role requires a candidate who:

  • Has experience crafting technical systems that enable gameplay (either alone or with a small team)
  • Is proficient in C, C# or C++ for quickly prototyping 3D gameplay
  • Is skilled at creating fluid user interactions with rich feedback and polished game feel
  • Enjoys enabling team members by improving the creative pipeline
  • Is comfortable with cross-disciplinary work and collaboration

This role prefers who:

  • Has experienced with visual scripting
  • Has experience in multiplayer game development
  • Has experience with online operation of a live game
  • Has experience using Maya or 3D game engines

Responsibilities

  • Work with a highly-skilled ITS team to deliver solutions for solving in-game and internal team challenges

Job Description

This position is for (2) two 3D artists who will work on Sky : Children of the light. Each of the artist will work with the team to create new content for the game which includes new maps, avatar’s outfits and cosmetics using our proprietary engine and Maya. The artist will report to the Art Director and art leads and work closely with the design team to successfully translate concept art, design layouts to final game assets

Must Haves:

  • 2+ years of professional experience modeling and texturing characters, props for games
  • Ability to create 3D environments and landscapes with maya
  • Willingness to learn our proprietary engine
  • Ability to translate 2D concept art to 3D models
  • Professional experience working with Maya
  • Strong interests in outfit design and cultural design
  • Strong traditional fine art skills, training, and production experience (illustration, painting, organic forms, color theory, perspective, 2D & 3D design.)
  • Strong artistic sense of shape, proportion and color.

We are seeking passionate engineers to join us building various backend core technology as platforms, including but not limited to:

  • Micro services running on container orchestration for rapid iteration of in-game social features
  • An innovative, data-driven, real-time, and seamless match-making system
  • A realtime, low-latency and multi-regional music jam service
  • A data visualization service to aggregate and present massive amount of player behaviors in 3D space

These services and platforms will be the core technology powering our current and future game titles, and eventually made available to external customers. We believe these solutions will fundamentally transform the future of multiplayer social games. We are also live-operating Sky: Children of Light with millions of active users generating terabytes of data per day.

As a Backend Engineer, you will serve a pivotal role to help architect large-scale and highly available backend systems, explore match-making solutions, implement micro services that can accelerate the iterations of social-gaming ideas, and embrace dev-ops responsibilities to serve millions of players.

On any given day at thatgamecompany, you might:
  • Design and implement large-scale, highly available backend systems that serve thousands to millions of concurrent players and aim for zero downtime.
  • Embrace modern technology of container and cluster management to make our backend stack more elastic and robust, and the deployment process more agile and reliable.
  • Design and improve the architecture of our real-time match-making system, as well as the peripheral data pipeline that enables global data-driven match-making at large scale.
  • Monitor the backend health and respond to any failures or glitches in order to deliver a smooth online experience to players all over the world; keep improving dev-ops tools to make the job more automatic and error-proof.

Required Skills

We expect you to:
  • Have thorough understanding of scalable and highly available backend systems; be familiar with open-source distributed system tech stacks, including but not limited to scalable databases, caching strategy, distributed transactions and dev-ops tools.
  • Be able to extract useful information from different sources of logs, find correlations between multiple layers of systems and diagnose failures, suspicious behaviors and performance bottleneck from bottom to top.
  • Be comfortable to work with Linux ecosystem; be fluent in Linux or macOS bash CLI tools and Python scripting.
  • Have deep knowledge of at least one of Go, Erlang or C++.
  • Have deep knowledge of at least one SQL or NoSQL databases.
  • Have deep knowledge of at least one distributed message queue systems.
  • Eager to learn any new technology and always open to jump out of your comfort zone.

Preferred Skills

Any of the following would be highly preferred, but most of all, we value engineers who are eager to learn new ways to deliver value to players:

  • Deep understanding of Go or Erlang.
  • Managed and maintained production environment on AWS or GCP.
  • Deployed services in Kubernetes with CI/CD tools.
  • Experienced in schema design and performance tweaking of MongoDB and Redis.

Job Description

Seeking a 3D animator and layout artist to join the art team. Along with keyframe character animation for gameplay and cinematics, this role will also focus on working with our proprietary game engine to construct and implement various elements included in cinematic sequences. The artist will work closely with both the art and design teams on tasks ranging from pre-production to final polish.

Must Haves:

  • Extensive professional experience animating in Maya.
  • Solid understanding of cinematography, staging, editing, pacing, timing, and narrative development.
  • Strong demonstration of keyframe character animation workflow.
  • Willingness to learn our proprietary engine. 
  • Strong working knowledge of 3D layout and camera animation. 
  • Excellent time management skills (for assigned tasks) and the ability to handle large workloads efficiently.
  • 2-3 years of direct experience in studio game development as an animator.
  • Flexibility and willingness to incorporate feedback into multiple iterations and revisions.
  • Desire and ability to put in the time and effort necessary to make a game great.
