The team has been hard at work developing Sky: Light Awaits for global release, and we are incredibly grateful for the feedback we have received from our fans and community so far. The feedback has played a key role in defining what’s emotionally moving for those who have tried it with their friends and family, in what will be an ever-expanding social adventure experience.

Sky Valentines Night

In lead up to Valentine’s Day this Wednesday, the art team did get a moment to take a quick break to specially design THREE beautiful Valentine’s Day digital cards for our fans to share with their loved ones. The designs demonstrate the emotional power of altruism, flying and companionship in the game.

Sky Valentines Day

We would like to share our Valentine messages to our families for supporting us as we continue to sacrifice and dedicate our time to the development of Sky: Light Awaits. As well as the community for their ongoing support and patience as we do our best to finish up the game for launch.

Thank you for being the light in our lives <3 Happy Valentine’s Day to you! Sky Valentines Sunset

As we begin to focus on beta-testing Sky soon, we are pleased to share some new work-in-progress concepts, design ideas and images/videos around the social adventure experience. We are still testing multiplayer ideas for the game, but we feel these new videos will provide a more in-depth look into Sky for our fans.

Shortly after the launch of Flower and Journey, we had many fans write to us and ask if we could consider creating an experience where they could easily play with friends and loved ones. They liked Flower and Journey but they wanted broader accessibility and to share the game with their family.

We deliberated for a long time on how we could make it accessible under the constraints and development scale as a small studio. It was something we thought long and hard about, as we began our work in earnest.  We ultimately settled on developing for Apple first (given the App Store’s reach and intuitive design), with the view of creating a new “one-swipe” touchscreen game experience that was easy for both gamers and non-gamers to pick up and use. We would look to publish Sky as a multi-format title as well.

Over the past few years, we have explored the concept of developing an intriguing world that could bring families together – while also pushing the boundaries of promoting positive behavior and social experiences within the game. Could we create a new kind of mobile social experience that would also move audiences emotionally with its theme and story as well?

[youtubevideo]

With Sky, we are looking to make an intriguing, ever-expanding world above the clouds, that is filled with light and darkness.  As a ‘Descendant,’ your goal is to collaborate with other players to unearth the buried mysteries in the kingdom.  Only by working together can you progress in the world.  Using the power of light and candles, you and others need to spread light across the kingdom as you encounter a cast of characters and creatures who may be able to help you along the way.

[youtubevideo]

The ultimate hope for the studio is to create a new experience that promotes compassion, altruism and teamwork within its audience base.  Join us as we begin to take flight into the skies this winter.

We thank you for your continued encouragement and support as we finish Sky.

Close to ten years ago at Sony, I had the pleasure of working with Jenova and thatgamecompany on the development of Flower for PlayStation 3.

As the original Managing Producer of Flower at Sony Santa Monica (and as now VP of Production at thatgamecompany), I think we knew that we were trying something different, but I don’t think we envisioned the game would go on to win so many awards, be inducted into the permanent collection at the Smithsonian Museum, or even help drive a movement that would inspire a new genre of positive and mindful gaming.

After Flower launched, we certainly could see its influence to break new boundaries and perceptions of how video games could be designed and played. Or how it could transcend and connect families and friends across ages, cultures and backgrounds.  That was certainly our hope – to bring it to as many people as possible, so that audiences around the world could see how games could be relevant to them.   At the time, we could see that gamers and non-gamers were indeed yearning for new kinds of interactive entertainment experiences.

So today, in a first-of-its-kind partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment and Annapurna Interactive, we are excited to announce that Flower is available to play on iPhone and iPad and can be downloaded from the App Store starting today. This is a special release for Flower because for the first time, more and more audiences can get to experience the calmness, poetic beauty and romanticism of game!  Our existing community can buy, share or gift the game to others to explore.  Casual players – older or younger family members and loved ones – can try it, complete it and maybe understand that games can encourage positivity.

[youtubevideo]

As a multi-format studio, we are excited to continue growing the accessibility of our games, and hope that Flower will continue to spread happiness to new audiences who may stumble across it.  For more info, go to the Flower App Store page here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flower/id1279174518?ls=1&mt=8

Making audio, whether sound effects or music, for a video game is one of the simpler things to do. Not that anything in game development is actually simple, no. Rather: many people do it, the processes are well understood, and there are so many different avenues to go about executing game audio.

Of course, making game audio is never just pure mechanical execution of well-worn processes. There’s artistry to be had. Aspirations, too. Ambitions. Fun!

I like to think of myself as a game developer before a musician, and like some developers, I’m a big fan of Raph Koster’s learning = fun model; I knew if I was going to be starting this new project with TGC, I needed to have things that I wanted to learn as I was bringing this soundtrack to fruition.

Over the course of development of our new title Sky, I pushed myself to learn how to properly play some wind instruments, including the clarinet and EWI (Electric Wind Instrument) and the music I’m now making has clearly benefited; it’s a big change from the pianistic pieces most people remember from Flower. I retired some of my old hardware and started learning new gear, such as an ultrasonic microphone that captured sounds above the human hearing threshold, bringing them into the audible range and expanding my options in the sound design realm.

Learning isn’t just tools and skillsets; it spans all the way to other people as well. Probably the toughest (and most fun) learning has happened with everyone that’s joined the company recently. I’ve been incredibly fortunate the last few years to get know our new lead sound designer Ritsu Mizutani, from his experience working on Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy at Square-Enix to his idiosyncrasies in workflow and tools to his preferences in ramen noodles.

Simply put: there’s a lot of fun stuff that’s been happening here during this production, so please anticipate some equally fun stuff for you to partake in in the near future.  In the meantime, please listen to a newly released track (also in our teaser video) from our new game, Sky.

Hello Everyone,

It’s been a very busy summer in the studio as the team has continued to push forward on iterating design concepts, multiplayer dynamics and starting to add artistic and audio polish to the game.  The day has finally come for us to start sharing our next project to the world… and we do so with more than a few butterflies in our stomachs and plenty of joy.

Today, we announce our next game — Sky — a social adventure game that will be coming first to iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. Details on additional platforms to follow.

[youtubevideo]

Sky has been a few years in the making.  After the release of Journey, so many fans wrote to tell us how much they enjoyed playing the game with their spouse, children or loved ones, and asked if we could create a game where they could play together.  We wanted as many people to love games, and so we were encouraged to explore this idea at thatgamecompany.  Which brings our games, for the first time, to mobile – a platform that many have access to, the world over.

It’s hard to explain the game, but a good place would be to say that Sky is a game specially created to be played, and shared, among loved ones and family.  If you can imagine the delight of visiting a theme park where lasting memories are made, we envision Sky will sometimes feel like that. We know many of our fans have questions about what we have been up to, and so alongside a gameplay teaser video and new artwork, we have included a conversation with Geoff Keighley to share more insight into our development process with you.

[youtubevideo]

As we work hard to deliver this game, we invite our fans to sign up for our newsletter where we will be sharing more information about Sky and developments within our studio. You can do that on our Sky page, linked here.

We are grateful for your support and we are excited to hear what you think. We look forward to meeting you above the clouds.

With much appreciation,

– the team at thatgamecompany
